Six Reasons Not to Miss the Refresh Conference

download

The Refresh Conference is truly a wonderful event for foster and adoptive families. There are so many reasons to love it – here are six that I hope will encourage you to mark your calendars for next year.

1. Your heart will be filled. Each year the speakers at Refresh challenge and bless me. Most of them are fellow adoptive parents, so they don’t sugar-coat their message. They say it like it is – being adoptive/foster parents is messy, amazing, painful, and wonderful. Robert Gelinas gave a message on the simple prayer, “Lord have mercy.” It is going to be with me for a long time.

2. Refresh is for the men. We ladies often find support in this journey, while the men are often more isolated. Russ experienced being with men who truly understand the issues we face, the decisions we’re making, and the life we live. He felt encouraged to stay the course and be faithful. There was a panel just for dads (that Russ spoke on) followed by time for the men to hang out together. It was a highlight for Russ.

3. There is worship and prayer. This is not a how-to conference, it’s more of a “how deep the father’s love for us” conference. You’ll find plenty of practical information in the breakout sessions, but it is much more than that.

4. There is no shame in the struggle. It will become very clear to you that you are not alone – no matter what you are facing. There was a breakout for parents in very difficult situations and we found ourselves connecting with those people over and over throughout the weekend.

5. You will find information that is relevant to you. Breakout topics ranged from ethnic hair care to sexual abuse, and self-care to preventing disruption. Foster parents, adoptive parents, folks doing kinship care – your interests and needs will be addressed.

6. You will feel cared for. The Refresh team goes to great lengths to make this a joyful and restful time. You don’t want to miss the great food, free massages, concerts and comedy, free devotional books, great giveaways, and the opportunity to connect with other parents.

If I had more time this morning, I would add four more points and make this a tidy ten point post, but the day is off and running.

Save the date for next year, February 27 & 28, 2015; it’s already on our calendar.  Be sure to “like” the Refresh conference Facebook page, and while you’re at it, I would be grateful if you would like my One Thankful Mom page as well.

Have a great day, friends.

Lisa

Let me introduce myself. Russ and I are the parents of twelve children by birth and adoption, and sometimes more through foster care. I'm the creator of One Thankful Mom which has been as much of a gift to me as to my readers. In 2011 I became a TBRI® Pracitioner* and have lived and breathed connected parenting ever since. I'm deeply honored to be the co-author, together with the late Dr. Karyn Purvis, of The Connected Parent; it is her final written work. I love speaking at events for adoptive and foster parents. I'm also the co-founder of The Adoption Connection, a podcast and resource site for adoptive moms. I mentor and encourage adoptive moms so you can find courage and hope in your journeys of loving your children well.

The Refresh Conference was wonderful and so were you! It was our first time going and we felt so blessed by everyone there. Thank you for taking the time to come and bless others that are traveling a similar road as you. I really appreciate you and your husband making the trip and for being so transparent. Praying for your family and your journey. Blessings on you all!

It sound amazing. I wish it was closer to my parents. The part about dads being involved especially catches my eye. Is the conference videoed? If so, is there a way to access it online or buy a DVD copy?
