My Brother's Keeper

Sunday night we gathered around the fire  eating  s’mores and watching the sky as stars began to appear. Eby was sitting between Isaiah and Samuel. Isaiah put his arm around Eby and said, “I love you, Eby.”  Eby leaned into his brother and replied, “Isaiah, you’re the one I can tell my hard things to, and Samuel is my comforter.”

Samuel and Isaiah wrapped their arms around Eby. He knows he is safe with them; they are watching over him, helping him to heal, grow, and learn.

I don’t think we fully realized how important and precious these sibling bonds would be. The older brothers and sisters are an important source of security and support for our younger children. They’re also healthy attachment role models.

We are thankful for our big kids who add so much richness to our lives.

Let me introduce myself. Russ and I are the parents of twelve children by birth and adoption, and sometimes more through foster care. I'm the creator of One Thankful Mom which has been as much of a gift to me as to my readers. In 2011 I became a TBRI® Pracitioner* and have lived and breathed connected parenting ever since. I'm deeply honored to be the co-author, together with the late Dr. Karyn Purvis, of The Connected Parent; it is her final written work. I love speaking at events for adoptive and foster parents. I'm also the co-founder of The Adoption Connection, a podcast and resource site for adoptive moms. I mentor and encourage adoptive moms so you can find courage and hope in your journeys of loving your children well.

Amen! I am thankful for that exact thing in my family to. Each and every one of my kids has at least one or two other siblings to whom they are really well bonded. Such a blessing!

Isaiah Qualls, I love the photo too. Eby wouldn’t let me hug him yesterday morning, but by evening he was all hugs and kisses. Maybe if I tell him the hug is from you…

I am thankful for my older children too! Yesterday, my daughter in law was able to listen and comfort one of my adopted children who ran out of the therapist's office earlier in the day.

Thank you. As a newbie foster momma … this warms my heart. Almost as much as seeing my older siblings love on the younger ones that come into our home.
