Karyn Purvis: Insights and Gifts

A friend pointed me to this great series of short videos, Insights and Gifts, from Karyn Purvis on the Empowered to Connect website.  I’ve watched the first four and plan to watch the remaining ones over the next day or two.  With each one only three to five minutes long, it is a small investment of time.  Even at our stage post-adoption, I need to be reminded of the basics of bringing a child from the “hard places” into our family.

We are struggling a bit right now…and I’m weary.  Oh for a day without drama!  Maybe tomorrow.  In the meantime, my blogging may be sporadic, but my kids seem to need me most of the hours of the day.

You will be happy to know that I took my own advice this morning.  I woke up and the thought of running my regular route seemed dismal; but I knew the exercise would do me good.  I gave myself permission to take a walk instead.  I headed out of town on the hilly, gravel road that winds through the rolling wheat fields.  It was raining lightly, but the quiet was wonderful.  I prayed while I walked and came home more prepared to tackle the day.  It is nearly 4:00 PM now and I am out of steam, I just need to press through a track meet, dinner prep, and two soccer games.

I hope you find these videos helpful.  I’ll be watching them along with you.  Let me know what you think!

Thank you April. It is 8:30 and I'm just about to put myself to bed. I just prayed for Honeybee and told her that God's mercies are new every morning – I'm ready to let this day fade away and anticipate a brand new morning.

Thank you for sharing. I am sorry for your weariness. There does seem to be an edd and flow to that huh? Just when you think maybe things are looking up things shift back to needing work again. It can be exhausting. Thank you for being willing to share that with us as well as the videos! You are a blessing.

I am struggling with what it means to powershare with your kids and trying to reconcile that with the need we have for structure and well defined and clearly understood rules and boundaries. But I am totally loving the videos! I constantly feel like I want to be more nurturing to my children, especially my 6yo daughter…but when I try she becomes a freight train derailing and plowing through the boundaries/rules! So tell me how you "powershare"!

Michelle, that is such a good question – I think it deserves a blog post of its own. I'll try to get to it in the next day or two.

Lisa, You posted this in April…God KNEW I needed to see it tonight…. I came to your site (as I often do) overwhelmed and looking for some help…hope. God used your post and Dr Karyn Purvis' videos to give me insight…and answer some questions I have. I am praying hard to be able to start the journey to turn my children's and my brokenness around. How do you, with multiple children (I have four and just one me)…juggle the one on one time needed fro each child? Would love to get some ideas…..you may have already posted on this.. I plan to go look tomorrow.

Thank you again for what you share. You are touching the hearts of five in my home, by your transparency and willingness to invest the time to share.
