July 5th

One of the best things about waking up too early, after staying up too late, is knowing that Hannah is already up and I can catch up with her through a few texts. That’s how my morning started today.

Yesterday Russ and I found ourselves in the very unusual position of having only three children with us. I hadn’t made any big plans, and the ones I had were loosely formed in my mind. The one plan we had was to take the younger kids swimming, which we didn’t do. Then a lovely invitation arrived on my Facebook page, and before we knew it, we were at a fabulous party having a delightful time.

We caught up with friends, including some we rarely see, while the kids ran and played with the 30 other kids there. The food was delicious and plentiful, games for the kids were hilarious, and the fireworks were downright fantastic – and just a wee bit unnerving for this slightly safety-focused mom. The kids loved every second of it.

Eby has a case of swimmers’s ear which I’m treating with drops made up of equal parts water and white vinegar. I’m hoping to get it turned around quickly since the pool is like heaven for my boy with sensory processing challenges.

Sunshine and I are packing her things for Girl Scout camp. While the other girls have gotten to go to special camps, Sunshine hasn’t had those opportunities; my niece (who is a camp counselor) wants to give Sunshine a special camp experience too. It is very thoughtful of her and Sunshine is super excited.

How did you spend the Fourth of July?

Let me introduce myself. Russ and I are the parents of twelve children by birth and adoption, and sometimes more through foster care. I'm the creator of One Thankful Mom which has been as much of a gift to me as to my readers. In 2011 I became a TBRI® Pracitioner* and have lived and breathed connected parenting ever since. I'm deeply honored to be the co-author, together with the late Dr. Karyn Purvis, of The Connected Parent; it is her final written work. I love speaking at events for adoptive and foster parents. I'm also the co-founder of The Adoption Connection, a podcast and resource site for adoptive moms. I mentor and encourage adoptive moms so you can find courage and hope in your journeys of loving your children well.

I spent my 4th of July dancing! We don't celebrate it here (New Zealand) lol. Glad you had fun at the party. I remember dinners like that when I was a kid. Maybe not quite so big, but we'd have 8-10 kids which wasn't bad, cos we lived in the city and had to fit them, along with their parents, into our house. We didn't do it for special occasions though, just to get together with friends. We have to wait until November for our fireworks.

We are so excited that Sunshine is going to camp and can hardly wait to pick her up in the middle of the state! Emily, she can get mail (and it is always very special to get mail!) and if Lisa doesn't have the address have her ask me!

Sounds about like us! We were packing light on the 4th with only the youngest two of our now 5 kids, soon to be 7. We had some plans possibly including the parade and a bbq but instead we stayed home and I took the kids for a horseback ride. Our own personal parade! Then we played outside and my 4yo got in the pool. At the last minute we decided to invite Grandma and Papa out and my kids' great Grandma for bbq'd ribs. YUM! We had a great, relaxing day.

Praying she has a lot of fun at girl scout camp, which I am sure she will. Sounds like the party and camp was a sweet blessing. Have a fun peaceful weekend. Praying for you all and God bless
