How We Miss Her Smile

This is one of two slideshows we shared at Kalkidan’s (Dimples’) memorial service. The first was our one year “Forever Day” video and this is one spanning her life from the very earliest photos we have of her. She was truly amazing and we are missing her so much.

Let me introduce myself. Russ and I are the parents of twelve children by birth and adoption, and sometimes more through foster care. I'm the creator of One Thankful Mom which has been as much of a gift to me as to my readers. In 2011 I became a TBRI® Pracitioner* and have lived and breathed connected parenting ever since. I'm deeply honored to be the co-author, together with the late Dr. Karyn Purvis, of The Connected Parent; it is her final written work. I love speaking at events for adoptive and foster parents. I'm also the co-founder of The Adoption Connection, a podcast and resource site for adoptive moms. I mentor and encourage adoptive moms so you can find courage and hope in your journeys of loving your children well.

As I watched this slideshow I was just overcome with the amazing feeling that you gave Kalkidan a FAMILY. The photos of the holidays especially moved me. As Christians we are called to care for the orphans, and Kalkidan's life is an amazing testament to the ways in which your family did just that, and it is an inspiration to me. I know you miss her, but I am thankful you have such precious memories to cherish.

God makes no mistakes when he blesses certain people with the gift of being able to love other people's genetics as their own babies. Not everyone can make forever families, but those of us who really get it, are profoundly impacted by this. Wow…

I'm just reading of this news now. Oh, how I have loved watching your journey with your precious Dimples. Not even knowing her, I have cheered her successes and felt for her in her struggles. As heartbroken as I am for your family in this loss, and I have sat here at my computer with tears rolling down my face, I am also so filled with gratitude that this amazing spirit had the opportunity to have a family and to feel so loved. I have no doubt that she learned what she needed to learn in this mortal life and will continue to grown and learn on the other side of the veil, taught by the master teacher. I am so sorry and will keep all of you in my prayers. Dimples was an inspiration to so many.
