God Writes Our Story

Thank you for all of your kind comments about my anniversary post.   I would love to encourage more of you to write about the “story” of your marriage and share it as a comment, or write about it on your own blog and leave us a link in the comments.  Marriage is a long journey and the vows we take of better or worse, richer or poorer, sickness or health, offer only a tiny glimpse of our futures.  What does it really look like?  What story is God going to write with our lives?

Thursday morning we told Little Man it was our anniversary, but he found it rather perplexing.  He said, “So…you’re getting married again today?”  No, we explained, we are celebrating the day we got married.  We finally explained that it was a “wedding birthday” and that made all the sense in the world.

We also had many kind wishes on FB.  My friend Em, left a comment that I had to share here,

“…I am so glad you and Russ have had each other for 27 years! God’s great gift to you and I are those two cute, funny, incredibly bright and just nerdy enough to be cool guys.”

Yep, that’s Russ, just nerdy enough to be cool.

As you’ve probably noticed, I haven’t been blogging much lately, so here is a quick update:

*Russ and Samuel had a very successful trip to Kenya and Until Then now has five wells operating!  They also went on a two day safari and had a fantastic time.

*The pool opened yesterday, and even though it was only 59 degrees, my kids wanted to go.  I wore jeans and a hoodie and was perfectly comfortable.

*Last week I flew to Seattle for “Sisters Weekend” with my sisters and parents.  We had a great time and it was a wonderful rest for me.  Russ drove over with the kids and we had appointments at Children’s followed by therapy.  It was well worth the effort to coordinate the trip.

*Ladybug and Sunshine are visiting cousins in Washington this week.  We hadn’t planned on Sunshine staying beyond the weekend, but she was eager to stay and is having a great time.  It is very interesting having the changed dynamics of Ladybug and Sunshine gone – another blog topic of its own.

*Sadly, yesterday morning one of my little girls couldn’t stay regulated, so she is spent the morning at Russ’ office.  We’re working hard to make home a happy place where everyone feels safe.  Since it is summer and fewer professors are on campus, it isn’t too difficult for Russ to take a child along with him.  It’s not exactly “Bring Your Daughter to Work Day,” but it works for us.

I hope your weekend is off to a great start!  Russ and I got up early to watch a lecture by Karyn Purvis and complete our homework for Module 5:  The Attachment Dance for our TBRI program.  We also need to complete Module 1 today; we missed it when we started the program late.

Let me introduce myself. Russ and I are the parents of twelve children by birth and adoption, and sometimes more through foster care. I'm the creator of One Thankful Mom which has been as much of a gift to me as to my readers. In 2011 I became a TBRI® Pracitioner* and have lived and breathed connected parenting ever since. I'm deeply honored to be the co-author, together with the late Dr. Karyn Purvis, of The Connected Parent; it is her final written work. I love speaking at events for adoptive and foster parents. I'm also the co-founder of The Adoption Connection, a podcast and resource site for adoptive moms. I mentor and encourage adoptive moms so you can find courage and hope in your journeys of loving your children well.

    Hi Lisa-

A friend of mine gave me your blog link as an encouragement to me and I am glad she did. We are the parents of 18 children, 13 adopted from state foster care. Of these 13, 7 have Reactive Attachment Disorder. We have also had various other issues throughout the years, some major, some minor – but all we know a part of God's sovereign plan. We are a few hours north of you – like backgrounds in denomination I believe…:-)

Anyway, just wanted to introduce myself. I look forward to reading more.

Amy, it is so nice to "meet" you. I admire your heart to parent so many special needs children – that is remarkable. Thanks for stopping by; I hope that I might have something of worth to share with you.

"Wedding Birthday." Hmmm. I think that should be the term from now on. I like it much better than "Anniversary."
