Five Reasons to Save the Date for Refresh 2017

IMG_0838

We’re just home from Refresh and I have to tell you how amazing it is to gather with 1400 other adoptive and foster parents. You need to experience it yourself.

March 3-4, 2017, and Refresh will be here before you know it, and just in case you need to be convinced, here are five reasons you should mark your calendar.

1. Me Too

A theme running through the entire weekend is “me too.” Refresh is one place where there isn’t much you can say about your family that will surprise people. Truly. Most of us have very complex families that may seem quite extreme to the average person – but not at Refresh.

2. Inspiration

The speakers are encouraging, authentic, and often quite funny.  We enjoyed every speaker we heard and will be laughing about some of the stories for a long time. I’m pretty sure I’ll never forget Marybeth Chapman and her daughter demonstrating what it took to get dressed that morning. On a more serious note, Beth Guckenberger reminded me that the Word is the most powerful weapon I will ever have.

3. Answers to Your Questions

There is so much great information to be had, if you want it. You can come to Refresh simply to be refreshed (grab a free massage or haircut, visit with friends, and be inspired during the general sessions), or you can dig into breakouts that are taught by some of the most knowledgeable experts.

you are amazing

4. Great Relationships

You will enjoy time with folks you only see once or twice year, and make new friends too – but only if you want to. Some people prefer to spend more time at their hotel, or find quiet spots to read, and that’s fine too. If you’re like me, you’ll forgo sleep to pack in a few moments with one more special person.

5. Even the Guys Like Refresh

This is one of the most unique aspects of Refresh. It is equally for men and women. The guys gather for their own morning devotional, lunch in the Man Cave, and even panels, by and for, dads. Russ has formed friendships with dads who understand his life, and that is a gift to both of us.

I have to share this picture because I love it, but only with this explanation – Refresh is a kid -free event. These three were there (briefly) to speak, Isaiah in the Black Lives Matter breakout, and the girls on the Giving Voice to Siblings panel.

I haven’t even unpacked my suitcase, but I wanted to get this down before the week got rolling. I hope you’ll come to Refresh next year. There are even scholarships available – so don’t let limited finances keep you away.

If you need more encouragement, check out The Refresh Conference page on Facebook.

Have a great start to your week, friends.

Let me introduce myself. Russ and I are the parents of twelve children by birth and adoption, and sometimes more through foster care. I'm the creator of One Thankful Mom which has been as much of a gift to me as to my readers. In 2011 I became a TBRI® Pracitioner* and have lived and breathed connected parenting ever since. I'm deeply honored to be the co-author, together with the late Dr. Karyn Purvis, of The Connected Parent; it is her final written work. I love speaking at events for adoptive and foster parents. I'm also the co-founder of The Adoption Connection, a podcast and resource site for adoptive moms. I mentor and encourage adoptive moms so you can find courage and hope in your journeys of loving your children well.

I know the breakouts weren't recorded; there are just too many in too many locations. I don't know about the general sessions. So many good talks – and you would have loved Marybeth Chapman. I'm still laughing over some of her stories.

The general sessions will be posted eventually on the Refresh Conference Facebook page. I didn't get to hug your neck while we were there (I didn't even pass you in the hall – just saw you in Isaiah's session and on the main stage), but I wanted to tell you how much you have been in my thoughts and prayers since you lost your daughter.

As always I was thrilled to see you! Thank you for sharing! Excited for next year! I always walk away something profound. I find myself wondering if the next year will be the year I have it all together. But then I would be perfect….lol! I love that I am learning from so many incredible people!

Melissa, it was great to see you too! Don't worry, not a single one of the 1400 people there this year had it all together!
