Ethiopia Story

A friend recently shared this story with me and I was reminded of just why we were moved to adopt our children. The orphan crisis in Ethiopia is very real. With my friend’s permission and with some name changes for the sake of privacy, I share this story with you.

“In August when the agency staff went to Ethiopia they did
interviews in Addis where they interviewed our
girls and another older girl, she is about 12 or 13. Kate was
really drawn to her (she is the pastors wife who was traveling with the team).”

“On a second trip Dave took a gift for her from Kate and her husband and some pictures they took in August. Dave said that the girl speaks good English and really
wanted a family knowing that her dad has died and mom is HIV + and
is very ill. So Dave gave her the gift and she asked him if she had a
family yet. Dave told her not yet, but God’s timing was perfect. The
mom began to cry for fear that her daughter would not be placed before she dies.”

“So Dave emailed somebody on the agency staff and told her the girl loved the gifts and that
she said she would be a good girl in her new family. She said she would work to
send her mom some birr until she dies and that she would not be sad
when her mom passes because she know she will be with Jesus. Dave said
at the time he and Getechew (the driver) could not hold back the tears.
Praise the Lord, Kate and her husband told Dave, go back out to
her home and tell her she has a Family.”

“I thought we could all use a little happiness today. God is so
wonderful and we can trust Him to do His will.”

Let me introduce myself. Russ and I are the parents of twelve children by birth and adoption, and sometimes more through foster care. I'm the creator of One Thankful Mom which has been as much of a gift to me as to my readers. In 2011 I became a TBRI® Pracitioner* and have lived and breathed connected parenting ever since. I'm deeply honored to be the co-author, together with the late Dr. Karyn Purvis, of The Connected Parent; it is her final written work. I love speaking at events for adoptive and foster parents. I'm also the co-founder of The Adoption Connection, a podcast and resource site for adoptive moms. I mentor and encourage adoptive moms so you can find courage and hope in your journeys of loving your children well.
