Eight Years Ago Today

Eight years ago today, Russ and Kalkidan arrived at the Spokane airport after an arduous 50 hour trip home. They faced bad weather, canceled flights, and an unexpected overnight stay in Atlanta. She became our daughter in January 2007 and we met her in February 2007, but due to delays with her visa, she was unable to travel home with us on our first trip. When the call came that her visa was approved, Russ was on his way back to Ethiopia within two days.

That day, our family was forever changed.

God gave her to us for a much shorter time than we ever imagined. Today, I have few words, but I believe that God knows how many days we all have on this earth. When he placed Kalkidan in our family, he knew she would only be with us until December 27, 2014; but she is in our family forever.

We love her and miss her.

Let me introduce myself. Russ and I are the parents of twelve children by birth and adoption, and sometimes more through foster care. I'm the creator of One Thankful Mom which has been as much of a gift to me as to my readers. In 2011 I became a TBRI® Pracitioner* and have lived and breathed connected parenting ever since. I'm deeply honored to be the co-author, together with the late Dr. Karyn Purvis, of The Connected Parent; it is her final written work. I love speaking at events for adoptive and foster parents. I'm also the co-founder of The Adoption Connection, a podcast and resource site for adoptive moms. I mentor and encourage adoptive moms so you can find courage and hope in your journeys of loving your children well.

What an honor to be entrusted to care for this precious child, even if only for a short time. You loved and served her well, and I imagine you also learned a lot because of her. Hugs.

I've sat for a few minutes with a blank comment sitting in front of me. We celebrate what we call Adoption Day in my family. Ours is in October. It stills me to think of one of my younger siblings no longer being wih us. Father bless this day, may this family have a day that is sanctified by you. Amidst the sad, let there be joy in your arms.

Hugs to you, Lisa. Kalkidan was so blessed when God placed her with you and Russ and your crew. You loved her so well and fought so fiercely for her healing. How your capacity to love was expanded because of your precious girl! A blessing that all of you will carry through the rest of your lives. Praying for you often and today especially. <3
