A Few Random Thoughts

Swimming lessons came to an end today. It was more fun than we expected and the girls made good progress on their skills. Best of all, Signe’s kids took lessons at the same time, so we got to visit each morning for two weeks – that’s the most time I’ve had with a friend in a long time.

Tomorrow we leave for our family reunion with Russ’ family. Russ’ parents own property on a river an hour away from us and each July the family gathers. Last year Russ and I were on our way to Ethiopia, so it has been awhile since we have seen some of our family. Honeybee is nervous and has asked dozens of questions about what a family reunion is, what we will do, who will be there. Tonight Samuel drove Ladybug and Honeybee to the store so they could spend their money on treats for late night snacks in the “Girl Tent”; now she is ready to hop in the car and go.

You may like to read Melissa Fay Greene’s article, The New Movie Parents Hate, about the movie, Orphan. While the movie has not yet been released, the trailer alone is offensive enough to have stimulated a boycott. As always, Greene has something insightful to say. Her book, There is No Me Without You is a must read for anybody who wants to understand the AIDS orphan crisis in Africa.

I also received a newsletter from the Lindholms who founded the Ethiopian Addis Kidan Baptist Association. We enjoyed their hospitality on our trips to Ethiopia when we stayed at the Addis Kidan guest house. We also visited a church they founded in Addis, and although we couldn’t understand the language, we certainly understood the spirit of worship. At an age when most people would be retired, they are still actively involved in the Addis Kidan ministry. This great article tells about their work.

We are off for a fun and lively weekend. I’m hoping that I can stay on top of fatigue and hunger and keep my little ones regulated – I would prefer not to have a big “event” this weekend.

(Note: I began this yesterday before we left, and although we have no phone service here, we do have internet. Today has been lots of fun. Dimples was quite peeved when she had to take a short nap, but I stuck to my guns and we are all the better for it. )

Have a great weekend!

Let me introduce myself. Russ and I are the parents of twelve children by birth and adoption, and sometimes more through foster care. I'm the creator of One Thankful Mom which has been as much of a gift to me as to my readers. In 2011 I became a TBRI® Pracitioner* and have lived and breathed connected parenting ever since. I'm deeply honored to be the co-author, together with the late Dr. Karyn Purvis, of The Connected Parent; it is her final written work. I love speaking at events for adoptive and foster parents. I'm also the co-founder of The Adoption Connection, a podcast and resource site for adoptive moms. I mentor and encourage adoptive moms so you can find courage and hope in your journeys of loving your children well.
