I left for the Summit on Wednesday morning, flying out of the little airport in our neighboring town. I was in Seattle, feeling airsick from turbulence, a mere fifty minutes after take off. My dear friend, Marybeth met me there, and the flight to Minneapolis went by quickly as we chatted and then slept a bit. We arrived a few hours before the rest of the From HIV to Home ladies, so we stopped by the Mall of America to see if I could find a dress for Mimi’s wedding. I’m not much of a shopper, and it felt a bit odd to be in “retail heaven” on the way to the Orphan Summit, so we gave up after a bit.
We met the rest of the staff at 7:00. It is a fascinating thing to meet people you know from their blogs and photos, and whose voices you hear over the phone in staff meetings. Jennifer and I have met before, but I hadn’t met Brianna or Abbey. It took, oh twenty seconds or so, and then it seemed like we had always known each other.
With only two days for the Summit, each General Session was packed with interesting speakers. Two of my favorite speakers the first morning were Doug Sauder with 4 Kids of South Florida, who spoke about foster care ministry, and Tom Davis with Children’s Hopechest who spoke with conviction about the tragedy of sex trafficking of vulnerable children.
The first Breakout Session I attended was Karyn Purvis, Giving Voice to the Orphan. I expected it to be much like the talks I have seen her give on videos, but she spoke on a more deeply spiritual level. Dr. Purvis was wonderful, of course, and I was thankful to see her teach in person. I suggested that next year she teach a session for “Traumatized Adoptive Parents” she only chuckled…but I was serious!
After lunch I attended Breakout Session: Adoption of HIV+ Orphans and Other Special Needs. It was wonderful seeing our friends from Project Hopeful and all of the people who crowded into the room to learn more about adopting these children.
I also attended a Breakout called Adoption and Orphans: Grief and Loss by Kris Faasse from Bethany Christian Services. It was an excellent session as well and I was impressed with the speaker’s knowledge.
The evening session was one of the highlights of the entire Summit. Mary Beth Chapman spoke about their life, how they became involved in adoption, and the loss of their little girl in a tragic accident. She was so transparent and so “normal” in the way she addressed the audience, and spoke of her grief. Then Steven Curtis Chapman sang and we all cried. I feel blessed to have experienced that evening.
I just learned that CD’s of the sessions will be available from Christian Alliance for Orphans and I plan to get a copy of the evening with the Chapmans.
More soon.

Christian Alliance for Orphans Summit VI – Day 2

Jill, I'm sorry I missed you! I hope we can meet next year. Thank you for reading my blog.
I heard MB Chapman is coming out with a book about her experiences with loss and her daughter. Did she mention this at the summit?
April, she did mention it and I saw it on her blog as well:http://chapmanchannel.typepad.com/marybeth/ Here is the a link to that specific post: http://chapmanchannel.typepad.com/marybeth/2010/0…
She was so genuine – I'm looking forward to getting the DVD of her talk.

I so wish I could have went. Planned to go with PH but couldn't at the last minute, would have been great to meet you and the rest of your staff from HIV to Home. Next year I am going no matter what! :) As of now I don't have any plans to adopt again so finances should look much better after this adoption!
Lisa, you had mentioned you were able to watch Dr. Piper's message. Is it online somewhere?
I also think the highlight of our weekend was hearing the Chapmans share from deep within, hearing their struggles, and how they have "wrestled with God." And yet there was an unmistakable joy and hope and peace that radiated from them. I'll never forget SCC leading us in "Blessed Be Your Name." During the "You give and take away" portion of the song, I saw MBC worshiping in the front row with hands held high – truly worshiping the One who had given and taken away. I am still moved thinking about it.
Hi Nordstroms! It was so great to meet you – thank you for introducing yourselves. My friend, Jennifer, bought a DVD of John Piper's message and gave it to me. She also tried to buy a DVD of the Chapmans, but they were sold out. The person working told her that CD's or DVD's are going to be available for $7.00…but I haven't seen anything on the website yet, so don't quote me on that.
I still get choked up every time I think of the evening with the Chapmans. I don't think I'll ever forget it.
Jill, I'm sorry I missed you! I hope we can meet next year. Thank you for reading my blog.
Andrea, I wish I could join you at the Summit in PA, but I hope to see you at the main Summit next year. I was serious about the session suggestion…maybe I need to email it to a few smart people and see if somebody will grab the idea…or maybe we should do it ourselves as a panel of adoptive parents!
Thank you for sharing with us! Could you do a post about some of the topics? I would like to hear about them!
Giann, I'm going to try to post about my favorites. There was so much good stuff.

Melinda, it would have been great to meet you in person. Let's do it next year! I hope, hope, hope I'll be able to go again. My greatest desire is to have Russ come with me…and maybe Rusty too.

It was so nice to meet you, Lisa! The conference was incredible. What a blessing to hear from such passionate people!
I agree – the speakers were fantastic. It was wonderful to meet you too! I hope to see you again next year.
