I wrote a post recently about The Connected Child by Dr. Karyn Purvis. I may not have expressed very well how much I liked the book, and at that time I honestly did not know how helpful it would be to me. I had been buried in complex books about attachment and I wasn’t sure that she was going to help me enough. However, Dr. Purvis gives concrete tools, breaking things down into small steps, that I have found I can actually remember when dealing with one of my children. She is loving, while having zero tolerance for disrespect, which is exactly right for my family.
Earlier this week a friend shared a link to some videos of Dr. Purvis speaking at a conference at Irving Bible Church. Given that we have been waiting 2 1/2 months to hear from the therapist our doctor referred us to, I figured it wouldn’t hurt to carve out time and watch these videos. Not to mention, these are free – how unusual is that?
I can only say that I was completely in awe of Dr. Purvis. She has an incredible gift and such love for the children from the “hard places”, as she puts it. She also has a tremendous love for God, which comes through in every lecture. That being said, even if you do not agree with her Christian faith, her lectures are so full of helpful, concrete tools that you should not miss them. I cried many times as I listened to her speak with great love and compassion for children like mine. My hope was also renewed as I realized how much I do have to offer and how much healing is possible right now.
The lectures are titled Better Understanding our Children, Effective Discipline Strategies for Adoptive and Foster Families, and What Is That in Your Hand? Two of the lectures are approximately one hour long and the third is 41 minutes, so you will have to make the time to watch them – but you will not regret it. Our children are worth it!

:) I knew you would love her! I am going through her book now and also a few others. Thank you SO much for posting about this subject….you are helping so many!
I have heard alot of good things about this book…and I needed it. We have had a really difficult week (months really) with one of ours…even as I opened your post right now, she is sitting beside me (very upset)…I now you understand how stressful it can become for all of us!
Well, back to the angry little heart beside me….
Thank you for this resource; we’ll be watching those videos very soon! We were just discussing last night how we can better meet some of the needs of our adopted children.
Thanks for letting me know about these….I’m looking forward to viewing them, but crazy things happening here right now!
