I hope you all had a wonderful Easter.  We had a smallish group of thirty for lunch, including some new friends of Andrew and Mimi’s, a couple of students, and two families that Russ and I really enjoy.  Our most long suffering guests stayed until 10:00 – that’s how we like it.  Although it was not a perfect holiday, I told Russ that it was a success for me because all of the highlights worked out:

*We had Easter baskets (granted, Noah shopped for the candy, so my usual analysis of the right ratio of chocolate to non-chocolate didn’t happen).  Russ filled the baskets because I was too tired and put myself to bed at 9:15 after a full day of Easter prep.

*The younger six all had nice clothes to wear (thanks to having a wedding last year).

*We were on time to church.

*Dinner was served only 30 minutes later than I had planned and it all tasted good.

*The kids had fun and we had lots of time to visit with the adults.

I consider that a good holiday!

I haven’t had much time to write for a few reasons, but one of them is good news, both for me personally, but also for the purposes of A Bushel and A Peck.  When Russ and I were in Denver at the Empowered to Connect conference, I spent a lot of time with Karyn Purvis’ lovely assistant.  She told me about a training program Dr. Purvis and TCU offer called TBRI, or Trust-Based Relational Interventions.  It is designed for professionals who work with at-risk children and, because of my work with Empowered to Connect, Dr. Purvis encouraged Russ and me to attend.

I knew from the beginning that the only way it could possibly work out for us to take the training is if God was in it and wanted us to be there.  We debated whether I should go on my own, but I don’t want to get ahead of Russ in all that I am learning.  While I may be the adoption writer of the two of us, we are parenting our children together and as much as I hope I will be able to share all that I learn to help other families, my most heartfelt desire is that our own children will be helped and healed through the knowledge we gain.

The details have quite rapidly been coming together and our first two modules of homework arrived in the mail last week.  We are starting one module behind the rest of the class (it began April 4th), so we have a bit of catching up to do.  Saturday we sat down to watch the first of two lectures on the Neurochemistry of Fear.  Try as I might, I got interrupted enough times that Russ had to finish without me.  Did I mention we have to answer study questions and submit them as homework?  It’s been a few years since I’ve had homework like this!

I’m going to finish that lecture tonight and then we’ll watch the second one together.  We have reading assignments as well, but those are easier for me to squeeze into my days.

There is also a 1 1/2 hour interview required for each participant – I haven’t figured out yet when I’ll find a block of time with no interruptions, but I need to sign up soon!

I hope you find it as interesting as I do, because I am going to be living and breathing this material for the next two months.  The on-site training at TCU is June 20 – 24.  As you can imagine, I am already working on making arrangements for the kids. We’ve got some Empowered to Connect projects being set in motion for the time we are there as well since Michael and Amy Monroe live near TCU.  We can’t be that close to their home and church without squeezing a little bit of work in.

It is pouring rain and the wind is howling around my house as I type – I’m thankful it was sunny yesterday! I hope your week has gotten off to a good start.
